45 Blindness Prevention in N. Rwanda

This project was designed in line with Government of Rwanda policies based on CBM working with a central unit in the Ministry of Health in Kigali. The outputs were technical training of 21 local medical personnel and training of 4,690 support personnel, Gisenyi, Ruhengeri, Byumba and Kibuye hospitals equipped with fully functioning eye units, 160 Community Health Centres equipped for basic eye care procedures, and increased number of people freed from avoidable blindness through 11,800 cataract operations, 4,000 other operations, 8,000 people provided with glasses and 30,000 eye consultations. The project was closed out prematurely because of a change in the Rwanda Government approach to eye health care.
