63 Samburu Water, Sanitation and Disease Control Project

This project was designed to improve the health and access to water and sanitation for the pastoralists in Samburu from an HQ in Arsim, Samburu District, Kenya. The project resulted in a decreased distance to community water points through provision of boreholes, rock catchments and water tanks. The project also established livestock water throughs and implemented waste disposal, built pit latrines, and planted indigenous trees. The access to safe water and other interventions were designed to assist the prevention and cure of active trachoma, which was prevalent in 80% of the population, to the WHO accepted levels of trachoma in less than 10% in children 1-9 years, through prevention and surgery. The interventions conducted and the health outreach from Arsim benefited an estimated 18,000 people.
