This project was initiated to combat TB in the Port Moresby Area of PNG and specifically to improve the cure rate from 50-60 % to 70% after 18 months and 85% after 36 months. Additionally to improve case detection rate for new sputum positive patients in the NCD from 276 cases p.a. to 400+ p.a. after 18 months and 500+ after 36 months.
Hope World Wide achieved a cure rate of 82% after 36 months and the project was extended by 9 months to bring the cure rate to the 85% which over time would see the number of TB infections fall in the general population. The cure rate however fluctuates because of many factors, primarily the fact that many patients are highly mobile, and the fact that whereas the treatment was normally completed, the follow up test to prove so was not always done. This is a substantial improvement from the 50-60% cure rate baseline from when the project started and the project can be considered substantially successful, although the statistic did not quite reach the target. Scaling of the TB control efforts are now implemented with The Global Fund as donor.
