The project was established to benefit Masai patoralists living in very poor and destitute conditions in 14 villages in the rain shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru in Mukulat Division, Arumeru District, Arusha, Tanzania., The project improved access to safe clean water and sanitation facilities through the construction of 4 deep wells, 4 dams, 6 Rain Water Tanks, a Gravity Fed Water Supply System over 6 km and rehabilitation of 14 km of existing pipeline. The project also established 14 Water User Groups and trained them along with 28 Village Health Workers, 28 Community Leaders, in health promotion and water management and hygiene in all 14 villages. Despite several problems and a breached dam in Lemugur, the project assisted a significant number of people with access to water.
