Phaung Daw Oo is a monastic primary, secondary and high school in Mandalay, which TCF has supported since 2001, which makes it the longest running project partner of TCF. The keys to its success is the charismatic personality of the school principal Sayadaw U Nayaka who has pioneered modern education methods in Myanmar. The school graduates around 1,500 students every year. Initially the project funded a three-storey school building and furnished it, helped build, equip and run a medical clinic and provided PDO with a printing press to produce its own books and as a source of alternative income. PDO has recently also opened an International University on the outskirts of Mandalay, where it is hoped that many of the graduated high school students will be able to gain a tertiary education.
