17 Pader Former Child Soldier Rehabilitation

17 Pader Former Child Soldier Rehabilitation

The last 7 rehabilitated soldiers awaiting repatriation in March 2010. This project continued the work to rehabilitate former LRA child soldiers. It was initiated in Pader, but was relocated to Gulu during the second year because of deterioating security. The project sought to receive, rehabilitate, reintegrate and resettle 900 Former Child Soldiers (FCS). Of the 900 FCS, 400 would receive vocational training and formal education as needed. The project was designed to work with the local communities to facilitate coping mechanisms for themselves and the returning childsoldiers especially around the establishment of farmer groups to increase their earnings. TCF visited the centre in Gulu in 2010 to try to obtain statistics on the fate of the children. The centre was still open and still had a very small number young men living there. Clearly the facilities were appropriate and adequate for the purpose it served in the past.
According to the end of project report 1,693 children were received, rehabilitated and resettled which is above the original target.
