The goal of the project was, over a four year period, to double the average income of 10,000 poor subsistence farmers and make the improvements permanent and sustainable. 75% of the poor in Africa are farmers, yet most of these farmers are net consumers of food, unable to grow enough to feed their families. Within the target client base of subsistence farmers, households spend up to 65% of their income purchasing food. The only permanent solution to this African food crisis is a sustained, dramatic increase in farm production, enabling farmers to literally grow their way out of poverty. In response, the One Acre Fund model delivers a whole, functioning Market Bundle to farmers:
1) One Acre Fund organizes existing self-help, community and womens groups into producer groups.
2) One Acre Fund finances and delivers planting materials.
3) One Acre Fund field officers deliver education to groups, so they know how to use the farm inputs.
4) One Acre Fund facilitates harvest markets and takes repayment for our services.
