The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) through its protection intervention for Ethiopian refugees in Gedaref State, East Sudan provided charcoal to refugees with specific needs as a source of fuel to contribute to their food intake and overall nutrition. More specifically, the provision of charcoal as a protection intervention was based on concern for refugees having to convert a portion of their food ration to acquire needed fuel for food preparation. Without such support, some refugees would engage in risky and insecure journeys out of the camps to collect firewood, as fuel assistance was not being provided in the camps. Through provision of charcoal for cooking fuel, DRC contributed to mitigating protection risks and improving access to food assistance, through the preservation of food rations. The intervention was carried out in Um Rakuba and Tunaydbah refugee camps, as well as in the immediate host communities surrounding those camps. Through cooperation and collaboration with UNHCR, the Forest National Committee (FNC) and the Commission for Refugees (COR), beneficiary targeting was effective and avoided duplication, and the distribution process was well coordinated. DRC also aligned charcoal assistance to the Forest National Committee guidelines which allowed DRC to exceed project targets, reaching a total of 3,238 households (7,444 individuals) in camps and host communities through the intervention.
